Los Parranderos de U.W.I. was
formed in 1980 by then members of the Spanish Society at the St
Augustine Campus as a means of exposing the University fraternity to the
art form of parang. Since that time the group has grown from a mere
Campus aggregation of past and present students to one of the premiere
parang groups in the country. Vibrant and spirited performances
complemented by the melodious voices of its frontline singers have
earned the group its own share of fans on the parang circuit. Serious
and committed to the preservation of the art form, the future of parang
seems bright in the hands of this talented group of young Parranderos.
Mi Parranda is the first recording of Los Parranderos de UWI. As the title implies, the collection highlights the traditional elements of our Hispanic heritage. The aguinaldos, nacimientos, serenals and despedidas all find pride of place in the collection. At the same time the selections pay tribute to some of the icons of the artform – Sylvestre Mata, Gloria Alcazar and Daisy Voisin. It is our way of saying thanks to the many stalwarts who have laid a firm foundation for the current generation of parranderos. Not to be forgotten is Theresa Montano for her tireless efforts to preserve crèche music popularly known as French Parang. At another level, the collection showcases some of the group’s original selections. Some of these – Canta and Mil Felicidad – written in the 1980’s are still an integral part of the group’s repertoire. Santa Maria and Mi Parranda, on the other hand are of more recent vintage. It is hoped that our mix of old and new will help listeners to truly share in the joy and love of Christmas, the very essence of parang. |
