The film examines Minshall’s life and art, a tapestry woven from multiple threads that include his “masography” coursing through 26 years; his design and stage acumen (documented in the 2006 presentation “The Sacred Heart”); his Olympic Games contribution; the Carnival stage (the Mas) in Trinidad preparing him for the world stage (the Olympics); and his set pieces of political protest and entertainment provoking parallel emotions in major North American, European and Asian cities.

When just about one quarter of a country’s population takes to the streets to do nothing else but celebrate the freedom to celebrate, you get the two-day world wonder called Trinidad Carnival. Originally brought to the hemisphere by the French, this parade not exhibits facets of every single culture that has ever touched Trinidad & Tobago’s multi-ethnic society. On these two days before Lent the streets of Port of Spain flow with colour, spectacle and life. Bands of Masqueraders (some up to 15,000 strong) together with non-costumed spectators fill the streets, and every ounce of air fills with music and human energy that defies explanation or reason.

In your hand is our attempt to capture just some of the wonder of the organized spontaneity of the Parade of the Bands 2006.

This striking and uniquely Trinidadian celebration of music, community and camaraderie is the major league of steelpan music. Coming from just about every corner of the twin-island state, steel orchestras ranging from 20 to 120 musical gladiators converge on the “big stage” – the geographical and spiritual focal point of Carnival – the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain. They compete for more than money – they play for the title of “Panorama Champions”.

From De Panyard to De Big Yard

The steelpan orchestra as it exists in Trinidad & Tobago is an impressive one. Consisting of up to 120 players, and over 400 steel drums, the sound is huge, intense and pounds the blood. Panorama is the ultimate test of steelpan virtuoso. Months of rehearsal culminate in merely eight minutes of intense performance on the Queen's Park Savannah stage. Eight bands picked over 3 weeks from over 20 aspirants. This is it!

"Panorama 2005 - From De Panyard to de Big Yard" goes inside the communities, inside the yards to bring viewers and listeners to the heart of the pan. All the ambiance, the camaraderie, all the pure musical talent is exposed for the first time on DVD!

International Soca Monarch 2005 -
the People's Choice Awards of Soca!

Unlike other world monarchies, the ruling Soca Monarch is selected by democratic process, not by blood line. So while no one knows when Prince Charles will ascend to the throne, everyone knows for sure that we will have a new Soca Monarch before the end of the night. And he or she, will be selected by the people, for the people, for a Carnival Saturday early morning coronation.

Soca is another product of the culture-synthesizing monster known as Trinidad Carnival. Born out of the mind-altering identity crises of the seventies, Soca is a unique combination of the island's indigenous music, calypso, with the Indian rhythms of Trinidad.

A free-flowing, exuberantly sensual, louder and more danceable potion - soca rhythms have driven over three booming decades of party culture.

In 1994 the International Soca Monarch Competition was started. This gave a new generation of soca artistes an arena in which they could compete on their own terms, with their own audiences and rules. The music was made to make people move. And that's how this competition is judged and won. You move the people, you move up.
