Joan Ammon (nee Awai), was laid to rest at the Mucurapo Cemetery after a Mass in Thanksgiving For Her Life, at St Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, Woodbrook, on September 28.

She will be remembered by all hockey fans for her speed, skill and dexterity on the Trinidad and Tobago National Team and as well on the Redsox Hockey Team in the fifties/sixties.

Joan's first national selection came at right wing in 1955 for what was then the Intercolonial tournament between British Guiana (now Guyana) and this country. In 1956, the first triangular tournament, which was known as the Ladies Intercolonial Triangular Hockey Tournament was played in Trinidad between B.G., Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, the one time that Joan was selected at inside left. She was back at right wing in the 1957, 1958 and 1960 Triangular Tournaments, and in her last national appearance in Jamaica in the 1961 Triangular.

Jean Spicer-Bain, captain of the 1958 and 1961 teams remembers "Joan was a very speedy winger, who combined with inner right Jan Pantin was a formidable duo on the right side because they knew each other so well."

While Jan Pantin reminisced "the player I combined with best was Joan Awai because we happened not only to play at the same time on the National team, but played together for Redsox." And former Blue Streaks' left half, Irma De Lima, remarked "I remember having to mark Joan Awai (Ammon) and Jan Giorgetti (Pantin) and I think they always got the better of me."

Joan was married to Carl (Super) Ammon, was according to her three children Mark, Karlene and Sean "a generous and loving mother", and a devoted grandmother to Nikolaus and Noah, Jacob, Ethan, Joni Mae and Daniel.

She will be missed by her Hilarian friends at the annual Bishop Anstey High School old girls' luncheon next July.
